Freddie “Joe” Powell, 72, of Monroe City

Freddie “Joe” Powell, 72, passed away Monday February 8, 2016 in Louisville, Kentucky at the University Of Louisville Trauma Center after a skiing accident on January 30.  He was born October 5, 1943 to Pete and Norma (Dreiman) Powell.  He lived his entire life in Knox County.
He attended and graduated from Monroe City High School in 1961.  He participated in track, baseball and his beloved basketball.  His sophomore year 1958-1959 Joe’s team won the Conference Championship.  Joe as a Junior at MCHS scored 290 points and averaged 14 points per game and as a Senior scored 824 points for 1961.  Joe was the team captain and they achieved the following honors:

All Regional Team 1961
All Conference Team 1960-1961
All Wabash Valley Tourney Team 1961
Joe scored 27 points against Vincennes Lincoln in Sectional Tourney play.  His team did not lose a scheduled game and reached the Elite Eight of the Wabash Valley Tourney.  They won the Vincennes Sectional in 1961 and were a Regional Finalist in 1961.  The team won 44 games his junior and senior years.
He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Oakland City College and his Master’s degree from Indiana State University.  He taught 6th grade at Decker in 1965 and coached 6th, 7th and 8th grade basketball.   He also taught at Fritchton and served as class sponsor.  He then taught at South Knox High School for 9 Years.  He operated Harrison Elevators in Monroe City and Winslow for 14 years and Harrison Trucking Inc. for 18 years.
His passion for skiing was well known with Salt Lake City Utah being his favorite destination.  He taught his grandson Jake how to ski and his niece Alexis Ravellette.
He enjoyed hunting at Glendale with his son and grandson, Matt and Jake.
Joe attended the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Monroe City for 25 years where he served as an Elder, usher and a Sunday School teacher.  The last 25 years he attended the Monroe City First Church of God where he served in the nursery, church greeter and took care of the church landscape.
He was a humble Christian man who appreciated every day and always enjoyed having breakfast with his friends at Verne.
Joe married Nancy Harrison Powell August 15, 1965 and they celebrated their 50th Anniversary on August 15, 2015 with a trip to the Florida Keys.
Joe is survived by his wife, two sons Matt Powell and his wife Leanne and their son Jake of Monroe City, IN Micah Powell and his wife Sabrina of Sioux Falls, SD.  He is survived by his siblings Jerry Powell of Morristown, IN, Janna Turpin of Tampa Florida and Jayne Ann Hart of Milton, FL.  His bother Gene Powell and his parents preceded him in death.  Visitation with the family will be from 4 PM to 8 PM Friday at the Monroe City Church of God.  The funeral will be Saturday at the Monroe City First Church of God at 1:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Monroe City First Church of God.
