I-STEP Scores have officially been released, and as was expected the numbers are not pretty. This past year was the first for a new test that was widely considered to be more challenging. Statewide 67.3% of student passed the English Language Arts sections–compared to more than 80 percent the year before….61 percent passed the Math Section, which is about a 20 percent drop and overall only 53.5 percent of students passed both.

The tests were adjusted after national Common Core standards were scrapped in favor of new, Indiana-written guidelines.

Lawmakers have been considering removing any negative influences the test scores might have on school districts and teacher pay.
