The General Assembly returns today for a short and potentially contentious session. Legislators have just 10 weeks to complete their work, in a session expected to be dominated by the debate over granting civil rights protections to gays and lesbians.

State Senator Eric Bassler of Washington told us over the weekend that as the debate heats up….he just wants those on both sides of the issue to “be nice”…

In addition to that hot issue….funding for roads at the local and state level will also be a source of much debate this session which again started today.

Meanwhile, Bassler says one of the bills he’ll be pushing this legislative session has to do with school bus stop arms.

He says that currently the law is that a driver who violates a school bus stop arm can only be cited if they are seen committing the offense by a police officer.

Bassler’s bill would amend that stipulation…

Bassler says the court would eventually decide if the alleged offense took place.

Another part of Bassler’s agenda this session has to do with Indiana’s state forests…

The short legislative session is starting today.
