Richard Allen Gilmore, 94, of Monroe City, passed away at 8:10 am Monday December 7, 2015 at Good Samaritan Hospital.

He was born on October 18, 1921 in Knox County to Samuel & Mamie (Shouse) Gilmore.

Richard retired as Postmaster at Monroe City after 33 years.  He was a member of the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church, the South Knox Service Club where he was the first president of the Kiwanis club which later became the South Knox Service Club, a 67 year member of the Monroe City Masonic Lodge where he served as secretary for 25 years,  the  Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department in which he was one of the original volunteers, the V.F.W., and the American Legion . A WWII Army veteran, he received the Purple Heart and one bronze star. Retired as a First Lieutenant, he was a forward observer of the 8th Golden Arrow Artillery Division. Richard was awarded the Knox County Veteran of the Year in 2015.

Surviving is his wife, Florence (Springer) Gilmore, whom he married April 6, 1943; his children, Bryan ( Jolynn) Gilmore  of Tennessee, Sharon (Daniel) Seneff of Texas, Belinda Trani of Maryland, Marlena (Bennie) Mason of Vincennes, Norman Gilmore of Florida, Rose (Scott) Ewing of Rochester, Indiana, and Clayton (Cindi) Gilmore of Monroe City; 15 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren .

Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters; two brothers; and a grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday at Goodwin Funeral Home with Rev. Brenda Wick officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion cemetery near Monroe City. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana Military Museumm, Walnut Grove United Methodist Church, or Good Samaritan Hospice.
