Good Samaritan Hospital is stepping up efforts to detect symptoms of lung cancer.

Hospital President and CEO Rob McLin says they now offer low dose C-T lung screenings that have been shown to save numerous lives in high risk populations.

During last night’s Hospital Board meeting, Patty Inyart, Lung Screening Coordinator at Good Sam says thanks to the screening program, five lung cancers have been found and another 20-percent of participants with abnormal growths in the lungs are being followed through the Hospital’s Pulmonary Clinic.

Persons who are considered heavy smokers are at risk of developing lung cancer during their lifetime. Inyart says that Indiana ranks 6th among all states for smoking.

Knox County Coroner Brian Hagen asked members of the Good Samaritan Hospital Board if it would be possible to relocate his office to the hospital. Currently, the Coroner’s Office is located at the Knox County jail He says he only has 170 square feet of space. He would like to find a larger office to house his equipment and to meet with families. Hagen says he also has several cabinets which contain confidential material including photos, doctor’s notes and patient information that need to be stored in a secured room. Hospital President and CEO Rob McLin indicated that presently they do not have any space available due to ongoing remodeling of the Columbian Towers. He once that work is completed they will see what they can do to help accommodate Hagen.
