The cause of a house fire at 708 North 3rd Street in Vincennes remains under investigation today.

Firefighters were called to the structure around 8:45 pm.

Battalion Chief Tony Jarrell says smoke and flames were coming from the rear of the structure when they arrived on the scene.

Jarrell says firefighters managed to ventilate the roof of the house and pour water directly down into the fire.

Jarrell says a nearby apartment complex at 216 Shelby Street was evacuated as a precautionary measure. He added the two occupants of the house managed to get out safely. The Red Cross was arranging temporary shelter for the occupants.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time. Jarrell says the home suffered heavy smoke and water damage. Vincennes Police also assisted firefighters at the scene.
