Seven fire departments battled a massive fire in Wheatland Thursday night. Just after 7-pm firefighters with Steen Township were called to the property of an old feed mill at 511 East Jefferson Street. A neighbor, Dan Bruner, says he discovered the fire after his dog began acting strange inside his home.

Steen Township Fire Chief Tim Yochum says the property owner was burning debris earlier in the day, but the cause of the fire has not been determined. Yochum added that he’s not sorry to see the building burn down.

Firefighters were kept busy as several small brush fires popped up near the scene. Crews made sure surrounding homes and properties were protected from the fire.
Train traffic was also suspended, since the railroad tracks were so close to the fire.

Units from Palymra, Harrison, Vigo, Washington and Vincennes Townships along with a fire crew from Daviess County. Firefighters remained on the scene well after midnight putting out hot spots.
