Hazel D. Melvin, 86, of Vincennes, passed away at 7:40 am Friday July 21, 2015 at Gentlecare Nursing Home.

She was born January 14, 1929 in Knox County to Alonzo “Shorty” J. and Elsie (Dycus) Cox.

Hazel retired after 23 years as a custodian for the Vincennes Community School Corporation as she loved her job and loved being around the kids. A member of Christ Community Church, she also belonged to the VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Eagles Auxiliary, and the FOP Auxiliary. She had a special place in her heart for all the staff at Gentlecare while she was in charge there and was an expert pie maker.

Surviving are her children, Patty (Jerry) McNeece and Jerry (Jane) Melvin, both of Vincennes; a sister, Mary Alice “Mac” Bowman of Fort Myers, FL; her grandchildren, Nathan Carie, Aaron Doll, Amy Tomberlin, and Marc McNeeece; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were her parents, and her brothers and sisters, Elsie “Gray” Cox, Pat Hunt, Marie Sievers, Ella McCullough, Zella Smith, Leland “Bud” Cox, and Alonzo “Lonnie” Cox.
