Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum says the city is hoping to begin the process of demolishing homes no longer deemed habitable. The City has received over 500 thousand dollars from the state’s Hardest Hit fund to tear down the homes.

Yochum says there are a lot of stipulations on how the homes are to be torn down. He indicated that soil tests are required and the city has been busy attempting to acquire the deeds to the properties in order to tear them down.

Yochum indicated the city is partnering with various groups in the community to maintain the lots. Some will be used for community gardens. After three years, Yochum says the properties

will be returned to the city’s tax rolls.

Approximately 30 homes have been targeted for demolition.
