Don’t be a statistic this 4th of July.

Thousands end up in the ER every year on the holiday due to fireworks related injuries and more fires are reported on the 4th than any other day.

Indiana State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson says we all should have more knowledge and take precautions for safety’s sake.

He says sparklers burn at 1200 degress so he suggests that glow sticks are a safer alternative especially for kids.  He says kids should never be allowed to handle and light fireworks and tells parens and adults to make sure children are a safe distances away during home fireworks activity.

Remember fires can ignite if fireworks are set off too close to buildings.  Also sometimes, fireworks may appear to be spent, but can smolder for an extended period.

Always use a clear open area have a water hose or bucket of water nearby.

According to state law, fireworks can legally be set off to two hours after sunset tonight, to midnight tomorrow July 4th and two hours after sunset July 5th through the 9th.  Local ordinances may vary.
