Swing bed service offered at Lawrence County Memorial Hospital

  • Swing bed is a service offered only at Critical Access facilities like Lawrence County Memorial Hospital to benefit Medicare patients.
  • What is a swing bed? Well it is used to continue a patient’s hospital care past the acute period of illness. A swing bed allows the hospital to continue therapy or IV medications for a longer period of time prior to going home to make certain the patient has their feet firmly under them.
  • A short stay in a swing bed decreases chances of re-hospitalization.
  • A swing bed does require a three day qualifying stay in an acute care hospital and patients must meet certain Medicare criteria to qualify for stay.  Swing bed days are part of the patients skilled nursing benefit through Medicare.
