SUMNER SENIOR CENTER PUBLIC HEARING

Use it or lose it. That phrase describes the situation regarding the fate of the Sumner Senior Citizens Center. The Lawrence County Senior Citizens Board of Directors scheduled a public hearing Monday night to determine if there will be enough interest and participation in keeping it open. The center has been plaqued by a lack of use and fiscal problems mainly stemming from paying rent on a building that is little used. Those in attendence discussed several ways to attempt to help defray costs and keep the facility open such as increased use of the building for other activities, fundraising benefits, soliciting individual, business, and organizational donations, changes to the food menus to entice more people to eat there, and getting the word out about the good that the center does for the Sumner community. Shania Holmes with the Southeastern Illinois Agency on Aging which provides funding to the Lawrence County Centers says that any plan to keep the Sumner Center open would have to be sustainable for at least a year and beyond. She also indicated there are no firm plans to close the center. The Sumner Senior Center Board is to meet Thursday to discuss a course of action.
