STATE POLICE PHONE SCAM

The Illinois State Police is warning Lawrence County and other area residents about a new phone scam. Scammers are using technology to make it appear as if the person called is recieving a call from an actual Illinois State Police District office. The person who calls then says the call is involving a police matter and requests personal information. This is a scam. The Illinois State Police emphasizes that it never asks citizens for any personal information  such as social security numbers or bank PIN numbers over the phone. Many people become fearful of crossing authorities and divulge their information. It is recommended that if you recieve such a call to ask for the caller’s name and tell them you will call back or provide nothing and just hang up.
