William ‘Bill’ Halter

William ‘Bill’ Halter, age 89, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2019 at his residence. He was born on January 26, 1930 in Vincennes, Indiana, the son of Louis and Lucy (Wichman) Halter. He married Ruth Primus on July 7, 1951, and she survives.

He attended St. Thomas Grade School, and St. Meinrad Seminary for two years. He was a graduate of Decker High School. Bill was a lifelong farmer and truck driver. He also worked as a heavy equipment operator with the Local #841. He owned the Drewry’s Beer Distributor in Lawrenceville from 1960 to 1964. He was co-owner of Halter’s Machine Shop from 1975 to 1985 and continued working there after retirement. He drove a truck for Hamilton Glass in Vincennes, Indiana. He was an owner-operator and leased to Rex N Don located in Mattoon, Illinois. His memberships include the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Lawrenceville, Illinois, and the Knights of Columbus, and Knox County 40 & 8 of Vincennes, Indiana. He was also a member of the Elks and the Moose. Bill and Ruth have been dedicated Christians to their church and family. He will be remembered as a loving husband, dad, and grandpa.

Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Joe Halter, and two infant brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; nine children, Pat Halter and wife, Renee, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, Kathy Cordes and husband, Steve, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, Ginny Hovermale and husband, John, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, Ruth Ann Myers and husband, Michael, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, Kelly Halter and wife, Ruthie, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, Tony Halter and wife, Missy, of Vincennes, Indiana, Angie Johnson and husband, Darrin, of San Diego, Califronia, Paul Halter of Lawrenceville, Illinois, and Mary Buchanan and husband, Justin, of Lawrenceville, Illinois, and Honorary Son, (#10) Ernie “Buzzy” Hayes of Lawrenceville, Illinois; four brothers, Francis ‘Boob’ Halter, Edward ‘Short’ Halter and wife, Phyllis, Steve Halter and wife, Marilyn, George Halter and wife, Cathy, all of Vincennes, IN; three sisters, Judy Vieke and husband, Ron of Vincennes, Indiana, Jane Cupp of Vincennes, Indiana , and Kay Jones and husband, Dave, of Elgin, Illinois; grandchildren, Brooke Halter and Blayze Miller, Katie Gher and husband Graham, Heidi Barney and husband Lance, Zach Lane and wife Julia, Josh Hovermale and wife Jenn, Lindsey Ochs and husband Tyler, Jennifer Pargin and husband Troy, Jason Morey and wife Barbie, Heather Tramel and husband Matt, Brandon Myers, Alex Halter, Madeline Halter, Clare Johnson, Morgan Halter, Wyatt Halter, Kendra Buchanan, Natalie Buchanan, Owen Buchanan, and great-grandchildren; Phoebe York, Vance Miller, Paxton Gher, Jones Gher, Emma Barney, Scarlett Lane, Peyton Decker, Hank Hovermale, Kai Hovermale, Sydney Pargin, Liam Morey and Reid Morey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at 10:00am CST at the Saint Lawrence Catholic Church in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Visitation will be Monday October 28, 2019 from 3:00 until 7:00pm CST at the Central Christian Church in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Vincennes, Indiana. Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorial donations may be given to the Lawrence County Senior Citizens, St. Meinrad Seminary or to the Gibault School for Boys
