The collapsing Chicago Cubs were eliminated from playoff contention Wednesday night as they dropped their eighth straight game with a 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. Back-to-back wild pitches by Cub reliever David Phelps in the bottom of the eighth inning enabled the Pirates to plate the winning run. The Cubs will miss the postseason for the first time since 2014. In a side note, Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein said he has no plans to return to Boston. There had been speculation that he would possibly replace the fire Dave Dombrowski with the Red Sox. Epstein came to the Cubs after leading the Red Sox to World Series championships eight years ago. The Cubs will attempt to avoid a sweep Thursday night when they finish up the three game series in Pittsburgh. It will be Jose Quintana (13-8) pitching for the Cubs against Joe Musgrove (10-12) for the Pirates. The game can be heard on Lite 103 WAKO beginning with the pregame at 5:30 p.m. Central Time 6:30 Eastern.
