SOCIAL SECURITY PHONE SCAM

Illinois and Indiana State Police have recieved complaints about a social security phone scam. Authorities say people in the area have been recieving calls from a person claiming to be a representative of the Social Security Administration claiming there is an issue with their social security number. The goal of the scam is to obtain that number along with other personal information. Some people are even being told that they may recieve additional monies or rebates from the SSA but they need the information to proceed. This is a scam. The Social Security Administration never calls to obtain personal information or promise additional money or benefits for that information. Anyone recieving such a call is asked to contact the Office of the Inspector General at 1-800-269-0271.
