HAMELS DOMINATE IN WIN OVER CARDS

Cole Hamels threw eight innings of three hit shutout baseball and Javier Baez hit an early two run homer to back him as the Chicago Cubs beat the St Louis Cardinals 3-1 Friday in the first of their three game series at Wrigley Field. Hamels improved to 5-2 with the win as he struck out a season high 10 batters and walked one. Pedro Strop gave up a homer in the top of the ninth to shortstop Paul DeJong for the only Cardinal talley. Victor Caratini had 2 hits including an RBI double. Cardinal starter Miles Mikolas (4-6) took the loss. He had to leave the game after being struck on the right forearm by David Bote’s hard combacker.  The win was the fourth in the last five games for the Cubs. Game two is Saturday night with Jack Flaherty (4-3) pitching for the Cards and Jon Lester (4-4) for the Cubs.
