Gene Phillip Moore

Gene Phillip Moore, age 91 of Bridgeport, went peacefully to be with his Lord on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN. He was born September 6, 1926 in Sumner to Dale and Louisa (Moore) Moore.

Gene married Donna Shoulders on November 22, 1956 in Bridgeport at the First Christian Church, and she survives.

In 1944, Gene graduated from Sumner High School. He then joined the United States Navy and proudly served during World War II (1944-1946) in the Pacific Theater. While there, he served as a radio operator on the U.S.S. Rehoboth. Upon returning home, Gene attended University of Illinois (1946-1950) where he received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Education and followed up with a Masters of Science Degree in Education Administration in 1952. Gene returned to his home area and taught in local public schools for 37 years. He was an educator in many aspects: Teacher, Coach, Principal, and Superintendent of Bridgeport Grade School. In 1972, Gene became the Assistant Superintendent at Red Hill Unit #10. He retired as Superintendent of Red Hill Unit #10 in 1986.

Gene was a long-time member of the New Hope Christian Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and an Elder for many years. He was also a member of the Elks and the Retired Teachers of Illinois Education Association. Gene had been on the Senior Citizens Board of Lawrence County and on the Housing Authority of Lawrence County.

As an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and Illini fan, Gene passed his love of sports and his favorite teams on to his family.

Surviving relatives include: his wife of 61 years- Donna Moore of Bridgeport: two children- Julie Goodwin and husband Neil of Troy, IL and Jeff Moore and wife Lynn of Chisago, MN: seven grandchildren- Connor, Kathleen, Kelly, Kenton, and Carter Moore, and Nicholas and Natalie Goodwin: one brother- Alan Moore and wife Mary Lou of Lawrenceville: one sister-in-law- Jane Neal and husband Mike of Atlanta, GA: one-brother-in-law- Dick Shoulders and wife Conita of Vincennes, IN: and two nieces- Gretchen Bruner and Lou Anne Douglass.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at the New Hope Christian Church in Bridgeport. There will be a reception held in the New Hope Christian Church fellowship hall following the celebration of life. Cunningham Funeral Home is assisting the family with services.
