A preliminary investigation revealed that a 17 year-old from Sumner was driving southbound on Christy Avenue just south of Sumner.  A 17 year-old from Lawrenceville was northbound at the same location.  According to the Lawrenceville teen, both drivers were acquaintances and jokingly swerved at each other.  As the vehicles met, the Sumner teen struck the driver’s side door of the Lawrenceville teen’s vehicle, forcing it off the roadway and into the East ditch.  Both vehicles then caught on fire and quickly became fully engulfed.  Passers by were able to remove both drivers from their vehicles.  The Sumner teen was flown from the scene, via helicopter, to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. The Lawrenceville teen was transported via ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes and was later transferred to Deaconess Hospital.  The Sumner teen sustained a fractured jaw, fractured tibia, facial lacerations and a severe concussion.  The Lawrenceville teen sustained a fractured leg and lacerations to both legs.  Neither driver’s identity was released.
