Marvin O. Waggoner

Marvin O. Waggoner, age 85 of Lawrenceville, passed away May 27, 2018, peacefully at home surrounded by family, He was born April 3, 1933 to George and Gertrude Legg Waggoner in their rural home in Crawford County near Chauncey, IL.

Marvin is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Ruth D. (Stout) Waggoner. He is also survived by his four children and their spouses: Vaughn D. and Mary (Saums) Waggoner, Kelvin S. and Kathy (Baldwin) Waggoner, Marva R. (Waggoner) Weisenborn, and Bryce H. and Carol (Racop) Waggoner. Marvin had eight grandchildren that he loved more than ever: Kyle and Melissa Waggoner, Kelly and Ryan Butler, Marcus and Kelly Waggoner, Marvin and Sarah Waggoner, Christopher Weisenborn, Jaclyn and Tom Cantwell, Eryka and Kevin Stein, and Elyse and Vincent Dill. He was so blessed to have gotten to know fifteen great-grandchildren: Kamryn, Avery, Brandon, Kate, Carson, Maggie, Elizabeth, Ben, Mary Grayson, Miles, Ryleigh, Kelan, Owen, Timothy, and Brooklyn. He is survived by his sister Euvonna Allen of Jeffersonville, IN along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Vondene Fritchley and Lorene Ribley, and brother Darwin.

Marvin was a man of many talents and had a work ethic that would be hard to match. He worked as an Oil Rig Driller in North Dakota, owned and operated several buses for Bridgeport School District and worked for Texaco/Indian Refinery for many years. He also volunteered for the Bridgeport Fire Department and served on the Bridgeport School Board. He opened the Waggoner Marathon gas station in Bridgeport and he, along with his wife Ruth, owned and operated the Colonial Motel and Apartments in Lawrenceville. His passion was in mowing, and he mowed many local cemeteries for over 55 years. He was a carpenter and all around skilled handyman who was instrumental in several large building projects in the area,

Marvin’s lasting legacy will be the faith and ethics he instilled in his family. We will remember him for being a caring family man and most of all steadfast in his Christian Faith. He was a longtime member of Bridgeport Assembly of God and very active in the church. His life was a witness to many and we know that there have been seeds of faith planted in his lifetime that will bear fruit for years to come. Over the years he prayed countless times for those he loved. Our hearts are aching but we are comforted by the fact that we will all be reunited in heaven.

Cunningham Funeral Home of Bridgeport is assisting the family with arrangements. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be a private family graveside service. A celebration of Marvin’s life will be held at Bridgeport Assembly of God Church in Bridgeport, IL on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.
