Mary H. Herman, 75, of Vincennes, passed away at 4:57pm CST on Monday Nov. 27, 2017 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburg, IN.

She was born August 12, 1942 in Clarksville, TN to John Richard and Elinor (Hach) Martin.  She was a registered nurse, but chose in time to pursue her passion and calling in life, that of wife, homemaker, mother, grandmother and friend.  She met the love of her life, Dr. Daniel J. Herman, Sr., and married him on May 8, 1965.  They were married for 52 years and during that time made their home together in Anchorage, AK, St. Louis, MO, and Vincennes, IN.  Along the way, they were blessed the birth of 8 children consisting of 5 sons (4 surviving) and 3 daughters. Her family grew to include 3 sons-in-law, 4 daughters-in-law, and 30 grandchildren. She was a lifelong Roman Catholic and was as devoted to her faith as she was to her family.  An active member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and Brut’e Award recipient, she relished any opportunity to practice her faith and to share it with others.  In addition, she loved the opportunity to provide for her family and friends, especially in the realm of cooking.  She was a wonderful cook, and she took great pride in feeding everyone who came into her home.  Her nurturing and caring nature were experienced by many, and she never knew a stranger.  She loved sports, especially when they involved her children and grandchildren. One of her greatest joys was attending athletic events and cheering enthusiastically for her team.  She was an accomplished champion in the fine art of verbal communication, as many who knew her will attest.  She was a matriarch of the finest example and, as such, she was a fiercely devoted and passionately loving wife and mother, but the role for which she seemed perfectly fit was that of grandmother, or as she became affectionately known, Grandma Mary.  She loved her grandchildren more than life itself, and they loved her in equal measure.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Daniel J. Herman, Sr.; her children, Dr. Daniel J. Herman, Jr. and his wife, Ann, of Vincennes; John A. Herman and his wife, Mindy, of McCordsville, IN; Patrick M. Herman and his wife, Sheila, of Vincennes; Maria E. Earley and her husband, Grant, of Vincennes; Dr. Molly A. Weiss and her husband, David, of Vincennes; Dr. Eric L. Herman and his wife, Katie, of Vincennes; and Dr. Lynn T. Stine and her husband, Dr. Scott Stine, of Vincennes; her grandchildren, Gabriel, Ellie, Lauren, Ben, Meg, and Faith Herman; Sarah, Cole, Abby, and Jacob Herman; Caroline, Kathryn, and Thomas Herman; Maggie, Mitchell, and Natalie Earley; Luke, Meredith, Max, and Nathan Weiss; Anna, Mary, Claudia, Philip, and Will Herman; and Emma, Bridget, Lucy, Kate, and Isabella Stine.  Mourning her loss are her siblings Elinor “Tootsie” Martin, John Martin (Faye), Katie Hogan (Larry), Peter Martin (Anne), Adolf Martin, and Terry Martin, who is one of her many godchildren. She will also be missed by Linda Dayson, her “sister by choice.”

She was preceded in death by her son, Phillip Adolf Herman; her parents, John and Elinor Martin; her sister, Mary Patricia Martin; and her brother, William Paul Martin.
