Man Sentenced to 37 Years for Shooting a Deputy

35 years was the sentence handed down yesterday for a Lawrenceville man convicted on multiple charges in connection with the shooting of Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputy Kyle Gilmore following a traffic stop in Lawrenceville on February 22nd of last year is scheduled for today. A Lawrence County Circuit Court jury returned a guilty verdict against 55-year-old Keith McKinney on August 3rd.  McKinney was found guilty on charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery and unlawful possession of weapons by a felon.  McKinney chose not to make a statement of elocution in his defense. Deputy Gilmore also chose not to make a statement. In addition to the 35 years, Judge Robert Hopkins also sentenced McKinney to three years of mandatory supervised release after he completes his sentence. McKinney was given credit for time served, which has been over 600 days in the Lawrence County Jail
