Vincennes Schools Superintendent Greg Parsley says it appears politics will once again play a role in what direction the state wants to go in replacing the current ISTEP exam.

The test measures a student’s competency over material covered in the classroom.

Parsley agrees that schools have to be held accountable for educating kids. But what he finds frustrating is the process and delays that have resulted in providing test results back to the schools.

A state committee voted last week on a list of recommendations for revamping the state’s standardized exams.

Those recommendations include moving the testing period from its current March and April times into May to help limit classroom disruptions. The panel also calls for quicker grading of the tests.

Outgoing state schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz voted against the recommendations, calling them a status quo. She says the ISTEP panel has not done any favors for students or parents stating that testing will continue Indiana’s reliance on teaching to the test

State lawmakers say a deadline to replace ISTEP for the 2017-18 school year will likely be pushed back.
