Attendance down at Rainbow Beach, gym equipment being added to Lester Square…

Attendance at the Rainbow Beach Family Aquatic Center is down this month. Vincennes Parks Superintendent Steve Beaman says while its not a drastic drop, the average daily turnout is about 200 less compared to June when the pool was averaging around 630 people.

He attributed part of the downturn to families taking vacation and the weather. Beaman says the loss in attendance was more than made up by sales at the pool’s concession stand.

With school starting earlier than usual this year, Beaman says Rainbow Beach will be open only on weekends during the month of August. He says they could lose money since the pool requires to be treated with chemicals 7 days a week while being opened only on the weekend.

He says the other problem is staffing the pool with students returning to school. However, some of the staff including lifeguards have agreed to stay on thru the end of August.

The Vincennes Parks Department is considering adding some Fitness Equipment at Lester Square.

Former Lincoln High School Graduate Ali Bobe presented her idea to members of the Vincennes Parks Board. Bobe who recently traveled overseas says the city she visited had little parks equipped with weight resistant machines to work out on.

With childhood obesity being a major problem in Knox County, Bobe thought having a place where kids and adults could go to work-out without having to pay membership to a fitness center or club would prove a positive benefit.

Superintendent Steve Beaman says the equipment is very durable and weather resistant so it can be used year round. He added the equipment doesn’t have a lot of moving parts like weight machines you’ve seen in a gym.

Beaman says the pieces they are looking to add range in cost up to 10-thousand dollars. Bobe has agreed to take the project on and work with Beaman in seeking funding to buy the equipment.

Beaman says they’ll be putting together a formal presentation to share with the Parks Board for their meeting in September.
