Democratic nominee Baron Hill has quit Indiana’s U-S Senate race, and is expected to be replaced by a big name.

Bayh won two terms in the Senate, both by landslide margins, after two terms as governor. This week’s expected announcement is a mirror image of his departure from the Senate in 2010, when he withdrew his name from the primary ballot at the last moment, leaving Democrats to select a nominee later.

Bayh would face Republican Congressman Todd Young, who defeated Hill in 2010 to win his House seat.. A Bayh victory would mean the seat has alternated between Republican Dan Coats and Bayh since 1988, with Coats retiring in 1998, then reclaiming the seat after Bayh’s 2010 retirement.

The Indiana Democratic Party has until August 10 to hold a caucus to formally replace Hill on the ballot.
