MEMORIAL DAY DRIVING

Indiana law enforcement will spend Memorial Day weekend watching out for dangerous drivers.

State police and local agencies will be on the lookout for numerous violations..including drunk driving.

“Too often we see people involved in collisions that result in death to themselves or death to another innocent driver or passenger.” Captain David Bursten with the Indiana State Police said. Officers will also be on the lookout for seatbelt violations.

“We really are encouraging people to take the time to buckle up,” Bursten says.

This Memorial Day weekend is shaping up to be one of the busiest in Indiana with the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 and lower gas prices. Motorists traveling through Indianapolis are being encouraged to avoid race traffic on Interstate 465 and Interstate 65 on the city’s west side.

WATER SAFETY

Boating and swimming season are kicking into high gear on waterways and in pools around the state, and officials are urging Hoosier swimmers and boating enthusiasts to take the proper precautions to keep everyone safe. Veronica Carter reports.

500 MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCE

Before the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, Hoosiers gathered at the Indiana War Memorial to remember those from Indiana who gave their lives in the cause of freedom in wars through the history of our country. The 500 Festival Memorial Service brought together the Capital City Chorus, the 38th Infantry Band, Gov. Mike Pence, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson, chief of staff of the United States Army, to pay tribute and remember. This year there was no ringing of the bell of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, because no one from Indiana died while fighting in the armed services since last year.

EVANSVILLE LST 325

Evansville’s famous LST-325 will be open for part of the day today (Saturday) to honor veterans on Memorial Day weekend. As such, free tours will be given to the general public between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.. The ceremony, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., will also celebrate Maritime Day, which honors sailors for their military service.

WHOOPING COUGH

The health department in a rural northwest Indiana county says it has confirmed several cases of whooping cough.

At least two more people also may have the illness.

Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory illness characterized by fever, coughing and other symptoms. Many who have the illness also develop pneumonia.

Carroll County is just northeast of the Lafayette area.
