James Allen sentenced in fatal van crash

The driver of an overloaded van that overturned on I69 killing two women, may serve as little as two years in prison after pleading guilty to 10 charges.

Under the sentence handed down Monday, 30-year-old James D. Allen of Washington, Indiana, possibly could go on work release after two years in prison. He also will two years on probation. He pleaded guilty to nine felonies and one misdemeanor.  He was sentenced to a total of 16 years.

Authorities have said Allen’s 16-passenger van was loaded with 24 people when it blew a tire and overturned on Interstate 69 in Gibson County on Sept. 24, 2015. Many of the passengers were Haitian refugees living in the Washington area being driven to an Evansville factory.

Two women, 29-year-old Christela Georges and 60-year-old Gena Moise, died from their injuries.
