Pence, lawmakers face backlash over new Indiana abortion law
Following on a campaign in which women called Governor Mike Pence’s office to tell him about their periods, activists plan a more traditional protest this weekend against a new law banning abortions sought because of genetic abnormalities.
The law makes Indiana one of the most restrictive states in the country.
Activists have posted on social media about calling Pence’s and other lawmakers’ offices to give details about their menstrual cycles or ask for a gynecologist recommendation. Pence’s office said Wednesday it had received about a hundred calls, mostly from out of state.
Groups also are planning a protest at the Statehouse on Saturday.
The backlash comes nearly a month before Indiana’s primary elections and which could prove to complicate an already tough re-election campaign for Pence against Democrat John Gregg.
