Governor Mike Pence has directed flags at state government facilities across Indiana be flown at half-staff immediately to honor a central Indiana sheriff’s deputy killed in the line of duty.

Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz died at an Indianapolis hospital after being shot about 12:30 a.m. Sunday at a mobile home in Russiaville (ROO’-shuh-vil), about 60 miles north of Indianapolis.

Pence says flags should be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of Koontz’s funeral. He also asks businesses to lower their flags to half-staff to honor Koontz’s service and sacrifice.

Sergeant Jordan Buckley and Deputy Carl Koontz were serving warrants at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday in Russiaville, about 60 miles north of Indianapolis, and were fired upon when they entered the home.   A suspect was killed in the incident.
