Vincennes firefighters responded to a rental home fire behind Walgreens early Saturday morning. The fire was located at 906 North 5th.
According to Battalion Chief John Streeter, a city police officer noticed flames coming from the house while on patrol and called it in.

The fire eventually found its way up into the attic and erupted through roof of the home. Streeter says they had to employ their aerial ladder truck to pour water down onto the fire.

Streeter says one firefigher was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. He says five occupants of the two story home were trapped inside and had to be rescued .

The Red Cross was assisting with arranging temporary shelter and personal items for the tenants of the home.

At this time the cause of fire remains under investigation. Streeter says the home sustained heavy damage. The home is owned by Smith Rentals of Vincennes.
