State Sen. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper, left) congratulates Princeton High School senior Jackie Young (second from left) at the Statehouse Thursday, March 3.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 41 honors Young for being named Indiana’s all-time leading high school basketball scorer. Jackie surpassed Damon Bailey, a former Bedford North Lawrence student, to earn the title as lead scorer for both males and females with a total 3,269 points. Messmer led the Senate in recognizing her accomplishment during session, congratulating her for her exemplary dedication to the sport and achievements in the classroom.

Young averaged 37.8 points a game and recently surpassed the state’s women’s basketball scoring record of 3,085 points. As a 6-foot guard, Young signed to play with the University of Notre Dame this past November.

Young was joined by Princeton High School’s varsity coach Charles Mair (second from right) and junior varsity coach Ron Hudson (right), as well as her family members and teammates, for the special occasion.

“Not only is Jackie an incredibly talented athlete who is dedicated to her team, but she’s also an extremely academically driven student with a 3.9 GPA,” Messmer said. “Jackie has proved her excellence both on and off of the court. Her achievements bring great pride not only to me, but to the rest of Senate District 48.”

Young is a top candidate for Miss Basketball, finalist for Naismith trophy and finalist for Player of the Year McDonald’s All American.
