Housing Authorities to merge temporarily

Knox County’s two housing authorities are temporarily teaming up to combat financial woes.

The Vincennes Sun Commercial reports that Knox County Housing Authority board member David Shelton says they will partner with the Vincennes Housing Authority until the county entity is on solid financial ground again.

Shelton told the newspaper that the county housing authority is not broke but is at a point where they need some experience to steer the ship for awhile.  The county authority was recently plagued with the theft arrest of its former maintenance director.

Board member Linda Painter has been running the Authority for the past six months and has saved some money by findout out  they had been needlessly paying sales tax on utilities.  She also has recommended the authority’s bookeeper’s position to be outsourced as another cost saving measure.

Under federal law Painter cannot be hired full time until what’s called a cooling off period for a year before a board member take an administrative position.

Vincennes Housing Authority Director Linda Frederick told the Sun Commerical that the city authority will help the county authority until there are funds to hire a new director.  She said it’s not a takeover it’s only a helping hand.
