The newest section of southern Indiana’s Interstate 69 extension  is opening today, giving motorists access to 27 miles of new highway.

Gov. Mike Pence is taking part in today’s ceremonies for the new I-69 segment between U.S. 231 near the community of Crane and Indiana 37 just south of Bloomington.

The newly completed stretch will allow motorists for the first time to drive from Evansville to Indianapolis through Bloomington using only multilane highways.

The first three sections of the 142-mile Evansville-to-Indianapolis I-69 extension opened in 2012 and runs 67 between Evansville and Crane.

A 21-mile section that will follow existing Indiana 37 between Bloomington and Martinsville is under construction.
