Gene Laverne Hughes

Gene Laverne Hughes, age 91 of Bridgeport, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2015 at the United Methodist Village in Lawrenceville. He was born in Moville, Iowa on August 6, 1924 to Burtis Alonzo Hughes and his wife Eva Clarinda (Hair) Hughes.

He married Viola Imogene “Imy” Parrott on February 19, 1943, and she survives.

Gene was a long-time member of the Hi-Way Church of God. He worked at and retired from Baltimore, OH Railroad. He had also worked at Calvert Drilling Company of Olney, IL, Suttle Equipment Company, setting pins at a bowling alley, and as a stock clerk at Woolworths. Gene loved fishing and playing the guitar. He was also an avid boxing fan. Gene truly loved singing, especially to his family. Surviving family includes: the love of his life and wife of 72 years, Viola Imogene “Imy” Hughes of Bridgeport: two sons- Rodger Hughes and Gregory Gene Hughes both of Bridgeport: one daughter- Connieta Goff of Marseilles, IL: ten grandchildren: and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his parents- Burtis Alonzo Hughes and Eva Clarinda Hughes: one brother- Burtis Hughes, Jr.: and one sister- Donna Marley.

A funeral service for Gene Hughes will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at the Hi-Way Church of God between Bridgeport and Lawrenceville. A visitation will be held at the church as well from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 1:00 p.m. Burial will take place in Petty Cemetery. Cunningham Funeral Home of Bridgeport is handling the arrangements.
