Firefighters were called to 1162 East Locust Street around 5:22 am Sunday in response to a fire at that address.

Pinkstaff says gas service to the home had been shut off and the family was using space heaters and an electric oven for heat.

Pinkstaff says the family managed to get out of the house safely. He says there was a smoke detector located inside the home, but according to Pinkstaff the battery had been removed.

The home was occupied by Tracy and Rachel Chambers and their 3-children, along with another adult and teenager. The American Red Cross is providing temporary shelter for the family at an area motel.

Pinkstaff says damage to the house and its contents is estimated at 25-thousand dollars.
