Knox County Sheriff Mike Morris says the county is certified to start housing federal inmates.

Morris told members of the Knox County Chamber of Commerce Tuesday he’s still waiting on the paperwork to reach his desk…

Morris says the prisoners could come from anywhere around the country and would be low level risk. He added it could mean as much as a half-million dollars in non-budgeted revenue for the county.

The Sheriff also spoke about technology upgrades his department has been able to achieve without burdening the county’s budget. Morris says with revenue they receive from the housing of state inmates they’ve been able to purchase new camera’s for their patrol cars and body cameras for deputies to use. He says the camera’s are useful in collecting evidence and also protects the county from liability.
