Synthetic drug use discussed in Vincennes

The Indiana Youth Institute hosted a forum in Vincennes yesterday to discuss the growing use of synthetic drugs like spice and bath salts. Lynne Rump, CEO of Children and Family Services in Vincennes says the hospital has seen a 24% increase in people who have overdosed on drugs that medical professionals are unable to identify. She says that is challenging for law enforcement when being called to reports of an overdose.

Drugs like k-2 and bath salts are easily bought online, and have become very popular among young people. Wanda McCarter, Director of quality compliance and risk management at Brentwood Meadows, says young people think these drugs are safe since they marketed as being legal, which couldn’t be further from the truth.

McCarter provided parents, teachers and health care professionals what to look for and some of the symptoms that arise from the use of synthetic drugs. She says early intervention is the key to helping those taking the drugs.
