Lawrenceville City Employees have a new one year contract.

Mayor Don Wagner announced at last night’s City Council meeting that the Employees Union had ratified the agreement which guarantees worker’s a pay raise.

Wagner says they negotiated only a one year contract with the employees union because of the status of state revenues. The Illinois General Assembly hasn’t made any headway in crafting a new state budget.

Wagner says money which they normally receive for motor fuel and some other items have been reduced. He says only about 450-thousand dollars of the city’s annual budget is generated by local property taxes the rest comes from state revenue.

Overall, Wagner says the city is on sound financial ground but it’s difficult to predict what the future might hold if lawmakers in Springfield don’t reach agreement on a new spending plan.

Lawrenceville residents will be paying more for trash removal beginning next month.

Members of the Lawrenceville City Council last night approved an ordinance increasing the fee for trash removal from 8 to 10 dollars.

Mayor Don Wagner says the rate hike was necessary because the city was losing money.

Wagner says the 2-dollar rate hike will also help cover a 3-percent increase Republic is charging the city for trash collection. Even with the rate hike, Wagner says Lawrenceville residents are getting a good deal. He says those residents who live outside the city are paying 20 dollars or more for trash removal.
