County council begins budget process

The Knox County Council is scheduled to sit down starting tomorrow with department heads to craft the 2016 budget.

Council President Bob Lechner says one of the area’s where they expect to spend more money this year is digitizing of county records.

The Council has set aside four days for budget talks. He says the reason the process is so tedious is just the sheer volume of numbers they have to review in each department’s budget.

One of the areas of the budget where expenses will be scrutinized is the courts where Lechner says the cost for pauper defense council has increased by several thousand dollars.

Lechner adds there hasn’t been much discussion among council members yet about pay raises for county workers. He says it’s his personal hope that funding will be available to fund at least a 3-percent payraise.
