Thomas “Tom” M. Burnett, 85, Wheatland, passed away Monday, August 17, 2015 at Bridge Pointe Health Campus. Tom was born in Vincennes on January 2, 1930, the son of Claude and Marie (Summers) Burnett. He graduated from Wheatland High School in 1948. He farmed with his father. He went into the U.S. Air Force in 1951 for 4 years. He met his wife, Alberta Heckel while stationed at Forbes Air Force Base. They were married December 21, 1952. He went to Great Falls Air Force Base in Montana, where as a Staff Sargeant and was in charge of a post flight crew on KB-29s which he dearly loved. He droved a school bus for South Knox Schools for 8 years and at the same time operated a service station in Wheatland. Tom drove trucks hauling live stock and coal. He farmed at the same time and retired at 78 years old. Tom was a member of the Bicknell First Baptist Church, was a deacon for several years, Bicknell Elks 1421, and the Vincennes American Legion.
Tom is survived by his wife, Alberta; daughter, Nancy McCann and husband Perry; son, Tom W. Burnett and wife Sherry; sister, Betty Neff; three grandchildren, Mandy Mahurin, Bryan Corn, and Stacy Beckham; four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Friends may visit the family on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Bicknell First Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at 10:00 AM also at the church with Rev. Seth Alexander officiating. He will be laid to rest at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Monroe City.
