The Vincennes Community School Corp. on Monday renewed its contract with Sodexo Campus Services to manage its cafeterias for the next five years.

The Vincennes Sun Commercial says Sodexo, which the corporation first hired five years ago, guaranteed an annual return of nearly $48,000 and another annual donation of $6,000, money that could continue to fund scholarships as well as the Backpacks of Love program that sends backpacks full of food home with kids for the weekend.

In total, Sodexo’s proposal equated to a guaranteed return of $269,300 over the course of the five-year contractThe newspaper reports that  Greg Parsley said he received two proposals, one from Sodexo and another from Aramark, which provides services for the North Knox school district.

Parsley recommended the board stay with Sodexo, which locally is based at Vincennes University.

The Vincennes Community School Board  took more steps toward a digital-based curriculum  last night.

The Vincennes Sun Commercial says the board gave approval  for  new textbooks for sixth- and seventh-grade math, students and approved an online subscription giving access to corresponding web-based programs. The cost for both is over $18.The software-based program for those high school students enrolled in Math XL classes that focus on pre-calculus and trigonometry will come at a cost of $15 per year and expand the number of exercises and activities available to students.

The paper quoted Curriculum Director Barry Stone as saying that all of the action will aid the corporation’s continued effort to make sure that next year, each student — from kindergarten through high school — will have a digital device as opposed to a backpack full of textbooks.

Stone said most of the students in kindergarten and first-grade at the city’s four elementary schools already have iPads, and those in grades 2 through 5 have Chromebooks, as do those at the George Rogers Clark Middle School and the high school.
