Steven M. Thais, 57, passed away at 7:00 pm on May 27, 2015 at his farm. Steve was born on August 14, 1957 in Vincennes the son of Louis B. and Evelyn M. (Fields) Thais-Snyder.

 

Steve graduated in 1977 from Vincennes University with an A.S degree, in 1979 from Indiana State University with a B.S degree in secondary education and in 1981 with a M.S degree in secondary and vocational education. He started his teaching career in 1979 with the Vincennes Community School Corporation and retired after 33 years.  Steve was a lifelong member of the Old Cathedral Catholic Church and involved with several civic organizations, including the Sons of The American Legion #73, Veterans of Foreign Wars Men’s Auxiliary #2459, Vincennes Lodge #1 F&AM, Hadi Shrine, Knox County Shrine Club, Knights of Columbus #712, Vincennes Fraternal Order of Police, Indiana Farm Bureau, Knox County League of Women Voters, Moose Lodge #779 and he was also a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. Steve was elected to the Knox County Council in 2003 and held that position until 2007 sitting out two years while he was a State Senate candidate. He then was re-elected to the Knox County Council and held that position until the time of his death; he was on the board of the Convention and visitors Bureau and Southwest Indiana Development Commision,   and chairman of the Knox County Soil and Water Forestry Committee. Steve also volunteered for the V.A. taking Veterans to various V.A. Medical facilities.

 

Survivors include his brothers, Edmund Thais and his wife Dorothy of Vincennes, sister, Martha Yochum and her husband Don of Evansville; brother,  David Thais and his wife Sue of Knoxville, TN; nieces and nephews, Pamela Andrews of Vincennes, Bryan Thais of Vincennes, Tyra Cleveland of Vincennes, Debra Vaughan of New Orleans, LA, Bruce Yochum of Sparks, NV, Susan Yochum of Cleveland, TN; and several great nieces and great nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his mother and father.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at Old Cathedral Catholic Church with the Rev. David Fleck celebrating assisted by Deacon Don Yochum. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Catholic Church. Friends may visit with Steve’s family on Monday, June 1, 2015 from 2-8 pm at Goodwin Funeral Home, and from 9:00 am until the service time of 10:00 am on Tuesday at Old Cathedral Catholic Church.  There will be a Masonic memorial service at 2:00 pm on Monday at the funeral home.
